Yes, they're a rather stoic lot [with a good dose of humour].

You know that's their *real* national anthem, don't you?

GG:I've just been discussing that with our visitors and apparently it was seriously considered, but because the swagman was a thief they took against the idea.
There was a marvellous film 'On the Beach' in the sixties, about a nuclear holocaust and the way they used Matilda at the end was deeply moving.

This brings back happy memories of being a kangaroo in a village pantomime a few years back. We had to sing this. It's harder than you think.

the extent of the flooding is astounding.

In this age of the internet and instant communication, we learn a lot more about the extent of these sorts of things. It's a real eye-opener.

I do like a bit of Rolf.

Scarlet: a singing kangaroo? Is there no end to your talents?

Debra: it is staggering. Our family have been lucky and escaped serious harm but their office block is flooded and the University where my Grand-daughter is due to go.

Randall: yes I find myself gasping with shock watching newsreels these days.

Eryl; har har:)

The video coming out has been unbelievable, the amount of water sweeping everything away in it's path
is overwhelming.

I am so relived your family is fine.

cheers, parsnip

Parsnip: thank you. We are so lucky.

I'vd always found a plaintiff quality to tht song--especially if it played slowly...I never really knew what it was saying, I just knew how the music made me feel....!

Just read your commenty about "On The Beach" Pat...Indeed. The way this song was used was very very moving.... I think that is part of my memory of it, too!
Frightening what has happened there and in Brazil, too! Is the world coming to an end?? Sometimes it feels that way, especially with the massacre in Arizona...Helkp Us And Save Us!

Oh Pat, just spent the night partying with my nephew Rob (Me & my brothers all consider him OUR son!) and him off to Oz on Monday. Very emotional, I love him so much, going to miss him dearly!

I know you Aussies are having major problems right now, and my heart is with you all, but look out for my Rob! :¬)

Yes, they have an amazing optimism don't they? The things that struck me most on the reports were people saying how their neighbours all pulled together and the cheerful way in which one couple returning to sweep the mud from their home smilingly said it wasn't as bad as they'd feared.

Merle tells a story on her post today about two boys who were stranded and when the rescuers arrived the 13 year old brother insisted they take his 10 year old brother first. The 13 year old was then swept away and drowned before they could get back to him.

This is a nice tribute in light of the danger and sorrow and I never knew the interpretation of Waltzing Matilda so I really loved the video.

Naomi: I knew it would have the same effect on you if you had seen 'On the Beach'. I'd like to see it again. A memorable film.

Sandy: my DIL who lives outside Brisbane phoned this morning and was just off to go and help clear up the mud. One woman on TV said her house was full of people clearing up and she didn't know any of them.
I once walked beside a flooded gutter in Queensland and was terrified a croc would rear it's head.

Mapstew: you poor lad. Don't worry - we'll look out for Rob. I told our son, who left today for Oz today to look out for him.
'Where?' he asked. 'Australia' I told him.
He's a lovely Irish boy - he'll be fine. Remember 'If you're Irish - come into the parlour.'

Pat said...

Granny Annie: that was just heart-breaking.
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video:)

Thanks Pat, I enjoyed that, it brought back quite a few memories and now I have a film I want to see too. I've read the book, a long time ago, but I haven't seen the film.
Glad to hear your family down-under are safe.

Sorry I wasn't around to wish you a Happy Anniversary, but here's to a Happy 2011.

Nea; memories? Have you travelled in Oz?
The book would be interesting and I hope the film hasn't dated too much. Don't worry about 'Happy Anniversary' I know how busy you get and am always glad to have you visit:)
